"Private Residence" -- Greenfield, Indiana

NIGHT has investigated paranormal activity in a wide variety of locations: graveyards, ancient bridges, and the sites of historic battles. However, before our trip to Greenfield, our team had not had the opportunity to investigate someone’s home. For each location, there is a story. The stories and memories of fallen soldiers, settlers, and Native Americans mass together in many of these other locations. On the other hand, the activity within a private residence narrows this scope down to stories of the family and the individual.

The Background:

A resident from Greenfield, Indiana contacted our team with reports of poltergeist activity. Such activity included the movement of objects, the murmuring of voices, shadows out of the corner of the resident’s eye, and the rather mysterious appearance of materials such as dirt and scraps of paper folded into little triangles. Probably the most spectacular account she gave involved a carpet cleaner’s encounter with the possible entity. After he had swept the upstairs, the carpet cleaner told the resident that the nozzle had been ripped out of his hands three times. The resident, however, reported that she did not feel threatened by such activity.

Our Investigation:

This was our largest investigation to date and involved the participation of all of our team members. We rendezvoused at one of the local gas stations just down the road from the resident’s home and headed to our site. At this time, we introduced ourselves to the resident and received a briefing on unusual activity that had been occurring. Then We took a brief tour of the house.

The resident’s style of décor was quite spiritual. Crystal displays and beautiful paintings were spread throughout the residence. Fox 59’s Kate Williams, who was doing coverage of our investigation that night, arrived at the scene. Control was set up in the sun room of the residence and we began to snake cables throughout the house to our new surveillance cameras.

As the sun began to set, we began our investigation, which ran until the late hours of the night.

The Results:

There were a number of interesting occurrences at the residence in Greenfield.

1.) EMF – Our meters spiked on a number of occasions in the guest bedroom, the basement, and the fireplace room. The strongest readings seemed to be coming from the basement, though we did notice a number of appliances that may have been causing these spikes.

2.) Temperature – The occasional rise and drop in temperature on the meters, but nothing terribly out of the ordinary.

3.) Video – Jim reported to me that strange bars of light appeared above Michelle’s head while she and I were doing our investigation in the basement.

4.) Motion Detector – The motion detector was set up in the fireplace room and went off two times. No people were moving about in the room at this time.

5.) Moving objects – The camera in the guest bedroom fell to the floor. We cannot say with certainty that this was the result of poltergeist activity. However, the camera was securely taped to the wall at the time.

6.) Sensations – Michelle reported nausea in several different rooms that also read positive for high electrical activity.

The Conclusion:

A number of occurrences during our investigation certainly suggest the possibility of paranormal activity. However, a number of other occurrences may be attributed to high concentrations of EMFs, moths or dust that can set off motion detectors, and the simple reality that tape can peel off of walls while under weight. Stronger evidence reported by the resident prior to our investigation, such as folded triangles of paper or possible residue (ectoplasm) from an entity, was not immediately available for analysis.

Whether or not a poltergeist is present, from the panoply of glass, crystal, and New Age artwork, there is certainly something very spiritual about this home. The possibility that the location is haunted remains at best unproven, but if we had our hands on trace evidence left behind by such a powerful entity, we could definitely suggest a stronger case for a haunting.

The spirit apparently decided to set off a motion sensor we had setup in the home right as Sean Aikins asked that question.
